Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Set in park-like grounds overlooking the Bay of Islands, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is New Zealand’s most hitoric site where in 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between Maori chiefs and the British Crown.

Discover our Birthplace, gather in the presence of history where warriors, governors and chiefs have made the decisions that form and guide our nation. Learn the significance of the ceremonial war canoe (waka) the flagstaff, the carved Whare Runanga and Treaty House.
